The Shelter
Turning the Cirriforrm into a single-wall (SW) shelter isn't a new idea, but I'm excited to take a fresh look at it. Â I offered a SW version of the DCF Cirriform for many years, and it was always a personal favorite (discontinued due in part to my phasing out of DCF). Â A silpoly version was always on the radar, and I experimented with some promising prototypes many years ago. Â Since then, updates to the Cirriform allow for dual front and side entry (previously front entry only), which complicates the design for something like an SW.Â
Based on feedback, I've decided to put a priority on retaining the dual-entry, and to do so, I've settled on a SW / Hybrid design (SW-H). Â A "hybrid" being somewhere between SW and DW (double-wall). Â Basically, the front and side entry sides of the shelter are more similar to a DW design. Â There is still a layer of netting between you and the fly, similar to what you'd find when pairing the Cirriform with the Bug Shelter in the DW setup. Along the non-entry side of the shelter, the design is more similar to a typical SW design, where there is only the fly between you and the outside world. Netting bridges the gap between the floor and the perimeter of the tarp along this side.
Specs:
- Floor length: 90"
- Tub height: 5"
- Front width: 34"
- Rear width: 26"
- Approx. interior height to tip of front apex:Â
- Total packaged weight: ~21.7 oz
(shelter, all rigging, and stuff sack) - Fly: 20D Recycled Silpoly
- Floor: 20D Recycled Silpoly
- Netting: 10D Noseeum
Note that actual specs may vary slightly as I tweak the design.
Design notes & Current challenges
- Producing a shapely tub floor along the non-entry / SW side, across a variety of pitches, is the biggest challenge at the moment. UPDATE: This seems sufficiently addressed, but further experimentation is needed over a wider variety of pitch widths & heights. Â A cord has been added that allows the midpoints of the floor to be pulled upwards towards the ridge. Â This has the effect of cocooning you and can help provide additional splash and spray procection when the shelter is pitched high.
- Interior side Zipper runs half the length of the floorÂ
Ordering
The first round of shelters is now available! Â (If shown as sold out, then the first round has been spoken for.) Â The price is 30% off the expected retail price based on current material and labor costs.
Through your purchase, you help me to advance YAMA's gear much faster than I might otherwise be able to! Thank you!
